The Business of Writing
Raising Hand...
By now, if you've followed me for any length of time, you know how I feel about my craft and the people in it.
I am very protective of screenwriters, especially when it comes to giving them a clear picture of what needs to be done in order to be successful in this industry.
For the most part, I do not sugar-coat anything and I am quick to shut down any misinformation or destructive advice scribes get from people who don't really have a clue.
I work with execs and hear what they have to say not just about writers, but about the business, and their own desire to succeed.
THEY ARE NOT THE ENEMY.
But what every screenwriter should do as they are working toward their dream is simply this: TREAT YOUR CRAFT LIKE A BUSINESS.
Business people don't deal in rumors or hearsay.
Business people don't act in the heat of the moment.
Business people don't waste time hating people they don't know.
Business people handle business.
And great business comes from great relationships.
If you are not FIRST AND FOREMOST building great relationships...
You don't have the room or right to bad-mouth anyone.
Or, as Uncle James might say.... GO SIT YO AZZ DOWN SOMEWHERE. Grown folks is handlin' bidness.

I said what I said.
